The hot towel shave

Forty minutes, six steps

The way Dez learned it from the man who sold him the shop. Nobody rushes a razor.

  1. The first towel

Steaming, wrapped round your face for three minutes to soften the beard and open you up.

  2. Oil and lather

Pre-shave oil, then lather whipped by hand in a warm bowl and brushed in against the grain.

  3. With the grain

A fresh blade in the razor, opened in front of you. The first pass takes most of it, gently.

  4. The second towel

Another warm towel, more lather, and a careful second pass across the grain for a close finish.

  5. The cold towel

A cool, damp towel with a drop of eucalyptus to calm the skin. The best thirty seconds of the week.

  6. Balm and a look

An unscented balm, the hand mirror, and a minute in the chair before you get up. No rush.

Questions

Asked in the chair

Walk in or book?

Either. Weekday mornings are quiet for walk-ins; Saturdays fill up, so book or join the list from the board above and wander over when we text.

Do you cut long hair?

Yes. Ask for a scissor cut; Rafa and Jules do a lot of shoulder-length cuts and curls.

Is the shave okay for sensitive skin?

Tell Marco when you sit down. He'll use an unscented lather, skip the second pass if you like, and go slower with the grain.

How old do kids need to be?

Any age. First haircuts get a certificate and a lock of hair in an envelope, and Jules has done hundreds.

Can I buy a gift certificate?

At the counter, any amount. They come in a little envelope with the shop's stamp on it, and they don't expire.
