A straight answer from our dispatcher's notes: what to do right now, what you can safely check yourself, and how soon we should come.

Call us now, and keep the house warm while you wait.

Below freezing, pipes are at risk within hours. Call the line and we'll put you at the front of today's list.

Try this first

  • Check the thermostat is on Heat and set above room temperature.
  • Look for a tripped breaker labeled furnace, and a switch beside the furnace that looks like a light switch.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls.

General guidance, not a diagnosis. When in doubt about safety, leave the house and call 911.

The team

Eleven people, one phone number.

Every technician is on our payroll, trained in-house and background-checked. The same few faces look after the same streets, year after year.

  • Marisol

    Owner, lead technician

Started Bluestem with one van in 2004. Still does the trickiest heat pump installs herself.

  • Gus

    Senior technician, 19 years

Knows every boiler built before 1980 by the sound it makes. Patient with radiators and people.

  • Ana

    Install lead

Runs our install crews and the room-by-room sizing behind every quote.

  • Theo

    Dispatcher

The calm voice on the phone. Theo builds the day's routes and sends your on-the-way text.

What neighbors say after a visit.

Sample reviews written for this demo site. They are not from real customers.

“Furnace quit on the coldest night in January. Theo picked up, Gus was here by nine the next morning, and we had heat by ten.”

Renata · Ashgrove Sample review

“Three quotes for a heat pump. Bluestem was the only one that measured every room, and the price on paper was the price we paid.”

Dale · Juniper Bend Sample review

“The tune-up report came with photos and readings I could actually understand. We've been on the Comfort plan for four years.”

Should I repair my system or replace it?

If it's under twelve years old and the repair is less than a third of the price of a new one, we'll almost always suggest repairing it. We'll show you both prices and let you decide; nobody here is paid by the sale.

Do heat pumps work when it's really cold?

Today's cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below zero. In the valley's coldest homes we sometimes keep the old furnace as a backup for the few bitter nights a year. We'll tell you which makes sense for your house.

How often should my system be serviced?

Once a year for each system: cooling in spring, heating in fall. A heat pump does both jobs, so it gets two visits on the Comfort plan.

What does the $89 diagnostic cover?

The visit and finding the cause, however long that takes. If you go ahead with the repair, the $89 comes off the bill. Plan members never pay it.

Are there rebates on new systems?

Often, from the utility and sometimes from the state. We list every rebate we know of on your written quote and fill in the paperwork for you.

How do I pay?

Card, check or bank transfer when the work is done. For new systems you can pay in full or spread the cost with approved financing; we'll show both on your quote.
