Lowen Cove, mid-morning

Tidehouse: a whitewashed stone house with sage shutters above Lowen Cove, its garden path running down towards a calm sea.

Welcome to Tidehouse

The luxury of taking your time.

At the end of a winding lane, where the garden becomes the coast, there's a whitewashed house with six rooms and a very different sense of time.

It was a harbourmaster's house once, then a family home for sixty summers. Now it's an inn in the old sense: a door that's open, a kettle that's on, and two people who know which way the wind's blowing and where the swimming will be calm tomorrow. Wake slowly. Eat well. Let the sea make the plans.

The rhythm of the house

A day at Tidehouse.

Nothing here runs to a timetable except breakfast and the tide. This is roughly how the light moves through the house, from the first kettle to the last lantern.

8:00 am

Breakfast at the long table

Served until half past ten: eggs from up the lane, bread from the quay, stewed fruit and yoghurt, and a pot of proper coffee left on the table for as long as you like.

We came for three nights and did, as promised, almost nothing. The best of it was the second morning: coffee on the balcony, the boats going out, and nobody needing anything from us at all.

Good to know

The small print, kindly put.

A short list of how things work here, so there are no surprises when you arrive.

  • Arriving & leaving

Check in from 3 pm until 8 pm; later is fine if you tell us, and we'll leave a key and a lamp on. Check out by 11 am. Leave your bags in the boot room and have one last walk.

  • Deposits & changes

A 30% deposit holds your room once we've confirmed; the rest is due on arrival. Move your dates for free up to 14 days ahead. Closer than that, we'll refund in full if we can re-let the room.

  • Minimum stays

Two nights in July and August, and on bank holiday weekends. The rest of the year a single night is welcome, though we'd always rather you stayed for two.

  • Children

Very welcome in the Lookout Suite and the Boathouse Loft. Under-threes stay free, with a travel cot and a high chair on request. Buckets and spades in the boot room.

  • Dogs

One dog in the Garden Room or the Boathouse Loft, $20 a night, with a bed, bowl and towel waiting. Dogs are welcome everywhere except the breakfast room.

  • Access

The Garden Room is step-free from the lane, with a wide door and a walk-in shower. The house itself has stairs and old floors. Tell us what helps and we'll plan around it.

  • A quiet house

No televisions, quiet after ten, and no parties or events. Good Wi-Fi in every room, for when you do need it. The whole house is smoke-free, the garden included.

  • Finding us

Tidehouse, Lantern Lane, Lowen Cove. Parking for six cars behind the garden wall. The nearest station is Merrow Road, twenty minutes by taxi; we know a good driver.

Questions

Asked at the long table.

Anything else, ring the house on (555) 014-2290, answered between 8 am and 8 pm, or add a note to your enquiry.

What's included in a stay?

Breakfast for everyone staying, good coffee and tea in your room, beach towels, wetsuits to borrow, the reading room and the garden. Supper on Thursday to Saturday and the lunch satchels are extra and booked on the day.

Can we book the whole house?

Yes, from November to March, for up to fourteen people. It's lovely for a birthday or a quiet family gathering (not a party). Mention it in your enquiry and we'll send a whole-house rate.

Is the beach good for swimming?

It's sheltered and usually calm, best an hour either side of high water. There's no lifeguard, so swim within your depth and never alone. We put out a flag each morning that shows how the sea looks, and we're happy to talk you through the tides.

How do we get here without a car?

Take the train to Merrow Road and we'll book a taxi to meet you; it's about twenty minutes. Once here you won't need a car: the beach, the wood, the café and the quay are all on foot.

Can you cook for allergies and diets?

Yes. Tell us in your enquiry and we'll plan breakfast and supper around it. Our kitchen is small and handles nuts, gluten and dairy, so we'll always be honest about what we can promise.

What if it rains all week?

Then the reading room fire is lit by ten. There's the wood, which is lovely in the rain, the gallery at the quay, and a box of jigsaws and board games that has seen many wet afternoons. Storm-watching from the Cove Room balcony is its own pleasure.

Can we arrive early or leave late?

If the room's ready, it's yours. If not, drop your bags, have lunch, and we'll find you on the beach. Late check-out until 1 pm is often possible outside summer, for $30.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

We do, for any amount or for a particular room, printed on card and posted with a hand-drawn map of the cove. They're valid for two years.
